Udupi: Man arrested for luring, blackmailing girls in Manipal

Udupi, Dec 5: Manipal police on Thursday December 5 arrested a youth for allegedly luring a number of girls with promises of marriage and then blackmailing them by shooting obscene videos.
The accused has been identified as Ilyas (24) from Konaje, Mangalore.




He had reportedly taken a flat on rent at Perampalli for Rs 35,000 per month, giving his name as 'Rahul Shetty'.
Sources said that he would introduce himself as 'Rahul Shetty' to girls on social networking sites and then lure them with promises of marriage. He would take them to his rented flat or some lodge and shoot obscene videos, and then blackmail them to extort money and gold from them, it is learnt.
The incident came to light after he reportedly lured a girl from Kemtoor. As per the complaint, he took her to a lodge and shot her video, and blackmailed her into giving him gold worth ten sovereigns. When he demanded more, the girl revealed the incident to her family, who then approached the police.
On Thursday, as per the instruction of the Manipal police, the girl asked Ilyas to come to a particular place to meet her, and when he came there, the police arrested him.
It is learnt that Ilyas has cheated around 15-20 girls so far.
As soon as the news spread, members of VHP, Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organizations gathered at Manipal police station and started a flash protest demanding strict action against the accused.
Manipal circle inspector Dinesh Kumar, Udupi circle inspector Maruti Nayak, Manipal SI Ravi Kumar and other officials are investigating.
