Dubai, May 27: Shankerpura is located 15 kilometres from Udupi which is regarded as the seat of Shri Krishna.
The place Shankerpura also called 'Pangla', but it has attained international significance because of the superior breed jasmine flowers grown there, which are being exported to seveal countries every day.
It was an initiative on the party of Michael Castelino, Harry Lobo, Dolphy D'Mello to form a group for Pangalites in the UAE to bring as pangla parishioners under one roof.
Over the last three years the community association has been doing a wonderful job for the parishioners and the community. The main motto of the Pangalites is to support their parish back home.
On May 26, Pangalites made a mark in the cultural circles. A traditional 'Yakshagana' (field play) was for the first ever time played by Catholics in the Middle East, largely through the efforts of Dolphy D`Mello, an enthusiastic founder member.
'Zoddti' (*The Trial"), a Yakshagana was brainchild of Dolphy D`Mello. CGS Taccode, a well-known konkani writer has written dialogues for this play. Story and direction is under the charge of Dophy himself.
It was a spectacular event with performance and dialogues, participated by Ashwin, Alwyn D`Sa, Dolphy, Jovia, Kevin Lavina Fernandes, Satish, Kishore, Suran and others.
It was a just beginning, maybe more and more associations will be inspired to come up with such ideas, with an aim to enriching the Tulu Nadu tradition.
The fourth anniversary of the Pangalites was different from previous three. The crowd was fully packed at President Hotel Karama. The programme was divided into different sessions. The first part was compered by Kevin D`Sa and Merlin Castelino. Dance, songs, skits and sponsors felicitation were presented as part of the first session.
Joseph Mathias, a son-in-law of Pangla, was the guest of honour along with Fr Frederick D`Souza of St Mary's Church.
President Alphonse Mendonsa was also present on the dais and he gave the welcome speech.
The stage programme was compered by Joel Quadros. Fred Elis of St Mary's Church and Edwin Mathias were honoured for their service to the society and the Church.
The second session was compered by Lavina Fernandes and Ignatius Alva. Different cultural events and spot prizes were announced.
It was 'Rhythms' music team, which is getting popular day by day through music, kept the audience live throughout the event. Not only Konkani, but also Tulu, Kannada and Hindi songs were rendered by the team led by the well-known Pernalite 'Rhythms'.
Jadu (Magic) show was yet another attraction. Prashant Shetty, a Mangalorean from Abu Dhabi, gave some interesting moments to the gathering through his art of magic. His performance was widely appreciated and applauded by the gathering.
