Cable operator drinks pesticide before judges, dies in hospital


Amritsar, March 30 (IANS): A local cable operator, who had attempted to commit suicide in the presence of judges of the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court here, has died, police said on Monday.

Cable operator Jaswinder Singh was admitted to a private hospital here Saturday in a serious condition after he attempted suicide in the presence of judges by consuming pesticide at an event here.

The judges were attending an event organised by the Telecom and Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in this Sikh holy city, 250 km from Chandigarh, on Saturday.

Before consuming the pesticide, Jaswinder Singh alleged that he was being harassed by some people who controlled the cable business in Punjab. He was taken to a private hospital but could not be saved.

Police have registered a case against officials of Fastway Cable and a ruling Akali Dal leader.

In his suicide note, Jaswinder Singh alleged that these people had ruined his cable business, harassed him mentally and financially and caused immense hardship to his family.

He also alleged that he was victimised as he was a witness in the Amritsar's Siti Cable sex scandal case. The case was being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
