Mumbai: Escort admits to duping MP's son for money to return home

Mumbai, Aug 22 (Mid-day):The police arrested the girl from her friend's apartment in Virar on Thursday night; she told them she hails from Haryana and duped the complainant because she needed the money to go back home

Four days after an MP’s son filed an FIR alleging that an escort had robbed him at knifepoint, the police apprehended the girl on Thursday night. The girl, who hails from Haryana, confessed to cheating the complainant of Rs 30,000, as she needed the money to return home.

Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni confirmed to mid-day, “We arrested the girl and presented her in court.” Just yesterday, this paper had reported that the police were searching for the escort with the help of her call records and information gathered from the pimp, Abhishek Ashok Prasad, who was nabbed earlier.

They also learnt that she had been operating under multiple aliases, but was registered with the escort service under the name Julie (‘Escort who cheated MP’s son was using multiple aliases’, August 21).

The FIR

The complainant, Mehar Singh Tanwar — son of Kanwar Singh Tanwar, a BJP MP from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh — had filed a police report claiming that the girl and her driver had looted him of Rs 1.5 lakh at knife-point outside a five-star hotel in Kalina in the wee hours of Sunday.

The police initially tried to trace Julie through her call history, by getting in touch with her contacts, but that didn’t work. The pimp provided considerable information and told cops that he would keep Julie in an apartment in Chakala, and she would also visit him at his house at Mira Road.

However, since the incident on Sunday, she had not visited either house. Then he informed them that Julie had a close friend in Virar who might be giving her shelter. Armed with this information, the police narrowed down on her location and arrested her on Thursday night from her friend’s house in Virar.

The police initially suspected that Julie was the daughter of a Navy officer, but have since established that this is not the case. They also learnt that she hails from Haryana and wished to return home but didn’t have the money to do so. She used to work for the pimp under contract, but decided to dupe the complainant so she could use the money to return to Haryana.

The FIR had also named Julie’s driver as an accomplice in the crime, but she told the police that the driver had no role in the episode. She added that the driver was unknown to her and was just a cabbie she had hailed to get to the hotel. Julie was presented in court yesterday, after which she was remanded in police custody till August 24.
