Mangaluru: School teacher arrested for sexually assaulting minor boys

Mangaluru, Nov 26: A school teacher has been arrested by the Ullal police on charges of sexually harassing minor boys for the past two years.

The accused, Dolphy Sequeira (33), a resident of Chembugudde, is a teacher at Nithyadhar English Medium School. He was teaching English and social science to students of 6th, 7th and 8th standards.

It is alleged that he used to take students to the project room in the school which does not have a CCTV and sexually assault them.

On Wednesday November 25, he took another boy to the room and despite his protests, Dolphy allegedly sexually assaulted the 12-year-old boy.

The boy then narrated the incident to his parents, who called up the parents of another boy of the same school, who had also reportedly been a victim of the teacher, and it was then that the entire matter came to light.

Based on a complaint filed by the parents of the two boys, the Ullal police arrested Dolphy on Wednesday.

It is also alleged that Dolphy used to take students to his house on the pretext of giving them tuitions and sexually assault them.

He has been sexually assaulting minor boys for the past two years, but the students did not inform their parents out of fear, it is said.

Dolphy has been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.

Ullal police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, the school management said that immediate action was taken after the parents of the two boys complained to the management committee. "An emergency meeting was called by the school management and it was decided to form a four-member committee comprising teachers and parents to investigate the matter thoroughly. Also, the accused teacher has been suspended from the school pending enquiry," said Fr Elias D'Souza, convenor of Nithyadhar English Medium School in a statement to the media.

    Suhas,

Unless you have specific bitter experience yourself, you will not generalize 'all teachers & lecturers'

I have examples of students of SAC, upon seeing a particular lecturer, they touch his feet in honor (he is not a Hindu) to greet him instead of folding their hands in 'Namaste'

Boys, admit that in public if any of you are students of SAC and studied Physics in recent years !

You will contribute to agreeing that not all teachers are like the one here in the news !

Firstly this is a wrong act.

The reason behind this might be many.
but the better solution for this is to marry at a suitable age, so that the person fall into these kind of acts.
So that he can be a responsible family man and fulfill his needs.

there are some cases like married man getting into these kind of incidents - This is intolerance :P

    Jackson,

I do understand how you must be feeling - trust me, there are several others, who underwent molestation related abuse in some or the other stage of their life, boys as well as girls. Molestation limits to touching inappropriately which surely is a level of crime. You need to tell about your ordeal to your close one, after which, you will feel relieved because if the person you confided in accepts you with your shortcomings, you will feel as if the entire world has accepted you. Therefore, do not shut in a shell, try to break yourself free.

But, this news is about rape which involves physical contact (penetration) which is extreme of a crime. We humans are in a developed society where consent is required to establish physical contact. When its done without consent it becomes rape.

Demands to make the law stricter has been falling on deaf ears so far, which gives courage to criminals. This got to be stopped at any cost !

Almost every human has such bitter experience, one or the other time, in their life time!! But those who suffer constant abuse over a long period of time get psychologically affected for their life with the scars the abuse leaves!!

It is pertinent to note that in the program 'Satyameva Jayate' most of the victims said that it was their close relations, whom they trusted and respected, were the ones who abused them!!

These dirty acts have been going since ages, but the fact that the awareness has increased, parents have become more children friendly, and the media has given rise to more and more of such exposures!!

In olden times if a child dared to point fingers at his teachers or some close relatives or friends with sex harassment complaints he would have definitely get a good scolding or whacking for complaining!!!

Majority of Homosexual are creative people who manage to get a place in art, music, event management, fashion - in general entertainment sector becose of their creativity.

At the same time we hear so many stories of models, both male & female, being sexually abused by their homosexual handlers who promise them of good break!

When these people are left alone with school children they obviously try to take advantage of their kids innocence & abuse them.

We as a modern society with growing number of homosexuals, intolerance is reduced & people started accepting them in the main stream.

Recently when US approved gay marriages, as a support, many facebook users changed their profile pictures with rainbow color!

There is nothing wrong being empathetic towards homo's but abusing kids is a crime punishable to death in many countries.

What is very surprising to me is that, despite so many issues of similar nature being published, the schools in Mangaluru seem to have no policies in preventing such occurrences.

What is the point of having committees, discussions and meetings AFTER the events?

Why isn't there some form of ongoing discussions by the school managements to PREVENT such things occurring?

A sensible policy for any school would include:

    * A teacher - lay or religious, upon joining a school, gives a written commitment that he understands the seriousness of sexual offences
    * A teacher NEVER takes a single student aside for any purpose there would be at the minimum two students
    * A teacher never punishes a student for any midemeanours instead he takes up the matter with the principal to discuss the matter with the parents
    * A teacher gives a written report to the principal on a monthly basis on how he has been following the policy
    * A principal/headmaster proactively periodically writes to the parents to discuss any sexual-related issues faced by their children at the school

It does not matter whether the school is a Christian school, a Government school or a Madrasa.

The management of the school must come up with policies and enforce the policies to prevent problems of this nature.
