Daijiworld Media Network – Bhatkal (EP)

Bhatkal, Aug 30: Bhatkal PSI Revathi Revankar said that she has complained to the chief minister Siddaramaiah, home minister Dr G Parameshwar and other senior officers on Monday, Aug 29 about the injustice to her.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, she said that she is alleged to have delayed the investigation in the case of life threat. “I had not seen the complainant at all. I did not even know about the complaint to higher officials. However I called both the parties and discussed the matter with them. I have kept its proof. The unfounded allegation has pained me. I have explained the matter to senior officials through the letter. I am bound by their decision,” she said.

“I have joined the department to provide excellent service but senior officials do not allow me to perform. I have enough proof about the harassment. I will continue fight till I get justice”, she added.

Revathi had resigned for her post after receiving suspension order on Sunday. “There was harassment since 2011 from senior officials. Bhatkal ASP was harassing me for some time. I had even thought of committing suicide," she concluded.

The primary role of a police officer is to assist the victims of various crimes and fraud by helping them file the FIR.

Many police officers do not want to file FIRs.

Why? FIRs means things are in writing, and the police officers need to run around until the matter is resolved.

In many cases, it does not easily get resolved, and goes to a court. Then the court calls the shots by ordering the police officers to do various things, run around, collect evidence, spend many sleepless nights, and report to the court.

All of this becomes a fair amount of work.

What is an easy way out of all this unnecessary work?

Simple: do not file an FIR!

    Has Revathi done anything different?

Until we do not have a law that sacks police officers for not filing FIRs, we will have plenty of Revathis.

According to the Criminal Procedure Code and officer in charge of a police station is bound to register a first information report when the commission of a cognizable offence is brought to his/her notice. Failing to do that can expose you to disciplinary proceedings.

Since many cases of harassment have been reported in the recent past in the police department, it appears that officials at the top post are either corrupt or taking undue advantage of junior officers. A thorough impartial inquiry is called for by the Home Ministry at state level.
