Mangaluru, Feb 11: The 21st Foundation Day of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) was held on February 11 at College Kalam auditorium.
Bishop of Mangalore diocese, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha delivered the Foundation Day lecture on 'Accompanying the Students'.
The bishop said, “During the pandemic, imparting education to the students was not so easy. Many had faced a lot of hurdles to do so. We realised that in the pandemic, we need one another. Now with everything coming to normal, we can witness hatred bring spread in the young minds which will affect their future. It is heart-breaking to see that it is spreading like a wildfire. As many as 2,500 people have committed suicide from 2018 to 2020 due to unemployment which is sad.
“Hearing is equal to receiving, while listening is a way for communication which calls for closeness. There are three ways of listening, one for information, second one to analyse, scrutinize and evaluate, and the third one is understanding the emotions.
“Teachers are the ones students will know for their knowledge and skills who can be a role model to them. Students might look for the teachers who can guide them when they undergo with problems and are confused,” he said.
As the college is entering into a new decade of its existence, the institution announced the construction of a new infrastructural complex in the form of SJEC Innovation Centre. This centre will drive the development of new technologies, community engagement, incubation and startups, and entrepreneurial activities of the institution. As a first step towards setting up this wonderful facility, the bishop blessed the Foundation Stone of the building on this occasion.
Meanwhile, the bishop was felicitated.
